How these pirate crew names are built
A pirate name and a pirate crew name are different jobs. Ned “One-Eye” Blackwater is a person; The Crimson Tide is a group, and groups at sea are named for their reputation, their captain, their fleet or their oath. The default style is the reputation name: a colour or a weather word in front of a sea noun, as in The Salt Wolves or The Leeward Sharks, with every adjective and noun glossed so the name says what the crew is known for.
Most real crews were known by their captain, because the captain is who the navy was hunting. That style builds a possessive from a short sea-and-shore surname or a nickname earned aboard: Blackrook’s Wolves, Mother Brine’s Drowned Men, Gallows Jack’s Lot. Each captain carries a hint about the sort of person they are, and the crew word runs from the plain (Crew, Lot, Boys) to the boastful (Reavers, Black Flags).
Fleets use a more formal register, closer to a charter than to a flag: The Black Armada, The Free Company of the Reach, The Brotherhood of the Leeward Isles. This is the register for a pirate nation, an alliance of captains, or anything that collects dues and holds water. The waters are invented (Ribbon Bay, Gallows Reef, the Broken Keys, the Kraken Deep), so a fleet can be dropped into any map without borrowing someone else’s.
The oath style names a crew for what it swore or what it survived: The Sons of the Gale, The Oathless of Ribbon Bay, The Unhanged. It shortens better than the rest, and shortening is the test. A crew name gets cut to one word in conversation, on a flag and in any list of members, so read the second word on its own before you commit. The Salt Wolves survives as Wolves; The Free Company of the Reach survives as nothing you can shout.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what players and writers ask us most
How do I come up with a name for my pirate crew?
Pick the register first, then generate twelve and read the hints. If the crew has a reputation, use the reputation style; if it follows one captain, use the captain style; if it is an alliance of ships, use the fleet style. Shortlist the ones that still make sense when you drop the first word.
How is this different from the pirate name generator?
That one names a person: a given name, a nickname and a surname, plus their ship. This one names the group. Use both together: a captain from the pirate generator can front a crew from this one.
Which names work as a short crew tag?
The reputation and oath styles. They are two or three words, carry no apostrophes and shorten cleanly to one word (Wolves, Gale, Unhanged). The captain style is the least suited to a tag because the possessive does not survive being cut down.
Are any of these real crews?
No. The word lists are original, and the famous crews, fleets and ships from fiction and from history are blocked from appearing.
Free to use?
Yes, freely.
