How these pirate names are built

Real pirates of the golden age had ordinary given names, plain English surnames, and a nickname that did the work: the given names here are period-plausible (Ned, Silas, Bess, Hester), the surnames are compounds of sea and shore words (Blackwater, Stormcrow, Saltmarsh, Gullwick), and the nicknames carry a hint of the story behind them (Gallows: escaped the noose; Sharkbait: survived the sharks).

Captains drop the given name and keep the nickname as a title, the way reputations work at sea. Cap’n appears now and then for the ones the crew actually like.

Ship names follow the real pattern: The Adjective Noun (The Crimson Gull, The Silent Reckoning), with a possessive form (The Widow’s Revenge) for the ships with a grudge. Each part hints at how the ship is sailed or where it came from.

Famous historical pirates and famous fictional ones are blocked so you never accidentally roll a name someone else already made legendary.
