How these demon names are built

Demonic names in the genre are guttural and closed: z, k, gr, x and th at the front, dark u and o vowels, and every syllable ending on a consonant. This generator builds from that inventory and allows heavy clusters, so the names sound like they hurt to pronounce, which is the point.

Endings carry a gloss from an invented abyssal register: -oth (the devouring), -gor (the flayer), -uz (the pit-born), -thul (the unspoken) read masculine; -a (the temptress), -ith (the whisperer), -ess (the pit-queen), -ine (the corrupter) read feminine; -ur (the nameless) is shared.

True names follow a three-part form with an apostrophe and a hyphen (Kaz’rak-ek: chain-tooth-bound), each part glossed, the shape many settings use for the name that binds a demon. Titles are what the demon calls itself in the summoning circle: Lord of the Seventh Pit, Keeper of the Black Ledger, the Smiling Plague.

Names from real demonology and from famous fiction are blocked. Nothing here is a real grimoire name.

What is the difference between a use-name and a true name?

In most fiction a demon gives out a use-name freely and guards its true name, which grants power over it. The generator gives both so your players can spend a campaign finding the second.

Can I use these for devils and fiends generally?

Yes. Devils in a lawful hell suit the titled style (Duke of Ash, Keeper of the Black Ledger); chaotic demons suit the raw use-names.

Are any of these real demon names?

No. Names from historical demonology (Asmodeus, Baal, Lilith and the rest) are blocked, and everything else is generated from original data.
