Aarakocra Name Generator

Aarakocra names imitate the calls their people make on the wing: short, bright and full of clicks. Each result comes with the aerie that raised the character.

How these aarakocra names are built

Aarakocra names in the genre are described as imitations of birdsong, and the published examples bear that out: clipped, whistled, heavy on plosives and a trilled r. This grammar is built from that inventory alone. Onsets click and whistle (k, kr, ch, tl, sh, wh), the vowels stay bright and forward (i, ee, a, ai), and codas either snap shut or trill, so nothing lands heavy in the mouth.

Endings are calls, not titles, and each carries a gloss: -ik (little one), -ka (swift), -rik (sharp-eyed), -ee (high caller), -kri (trilled cry), -aya (wind), -sha (feather). Others are plainer notes on the bird: -itch (always talking), -ak (first out of the nest), -kee (watcher). None of them is gendered, because aarakocra naming in most settings is not either, and the meaning line under a name is simply the call it ends on.

Aarakocra have no surname. What they answer to instead is the aerie, so the second part here is a place: a height word (Crag, Spire, Ledge, Scarp, Needle) compounded onto a wind or weather word (wind, gale, thunder, mist, roost). Cragwind and Ledgethunder read as somewhere you could point to on a map, and the hint spells the compound out.

Length works on the personal name. Short gives the single-syllable calls a fledgling answers to, which is what the flock uses until the bird can fly properly. Long stretches to three syllables, the form older aarakocra accumulate the way other peoples collect titles. The aerie name does not change with length, because the cliff does not change either.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what players and writers ask us most

Do aarakocra have surnames?

No. They are known by a personal name and by their aerie, which functions socially the way a family name does elsewhere. That is why the second part of every result names a place on a cliff rather than a lineage.

Why are the names not gendered?

Because aarakocra naming does not work that way in the settings that describe it. The endings carry meaning (swift, feather, wind, watcher) rather than gender, so any of them suits any character.

How do I say these out loud?

Quickly and high. The grammar avoids heavy consonant clusters on purpose, so every result is one or two beats with the stress on the first: KRIK-ik, CHEE-rah. Aarakocra speech is often written as untranslatable for that reason.

Are these names free to use?

Yes. Everything is generated from original data written for this site, and the published aarakocra names are blocked so they cannot appear.
