How these d&d character names are built

Every race in Dungeons & Dragons names itself differently, and a single shuffled syllable list cannot capture that. This page routes each race to its own grammar: elves get liquids, diphthongs and glossed endings such as -iel (daughter); dwarves get hard clusters and forged clan names; tieflings get infernal endings or virtue names; dragonborn get the clan spoken first. The dedicated generator for each race, linked below, adds style options this page keeps simple.

The default human register is the Heartlands one (Anglo-Frankish given names, trade and place surnames). Switch to the Human generator for Northlands, Southern coast and Steppe registers.

Any race (surprise me) rolls a race per name and labels each result, which is the fastest way to fill a tavern with twelve patrons who do not all sound like they came from the same village.

Gender and length pass through to whichever grammar is in use. Meanings shown under each name come from the glossed parts that grammar assembled.

Which races are covered?

Human, elf (high), dwarf, halfling, gnome, half-elf, tiefling, dragonborn, orc, half-orc, goblin, drow and githyanki. Each has a dedicated generator with more options, linked in Related generators.

Are these official D&D names?

No. Every name is generated from original data written to match how each race sounds in play. Nothing is copied from published books, and the famous canonical names are blocked so they cannot appear. Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast; this is an independent fan tool.

How do I name a whole party quickly?

Choose Any race, set How many to 24, and star one name per player. The label under each name tells you the race, so you can match names to character sheets.

Can I share the list with my players?
