How these fantasy world names are built

World names need to be sayable in one breath and to sound older than any kingdom in them. The mythic register here favours vowel-initial names, soft th, v and l onsets, and diphthongs like ae, closed by an ending that glosses the world’s nature: -ia (the land), -eth (the first land), -ara (the dawn world), -ion (the made world), -ys (the dreaming), -oth (the old world), -anor (sun-land).

Descriptive names state the premise: The Shattered Realms, The Drowned Isles, Everwinter, Twilightfall. Each part carries a hint (Silent: the gods are gone; Hollow: a world within), so the name and the campaign pitch arrive together.
