MMO Name Generator: Character Names & Gamertags
An MMO needs two names from you: one for the character-creation screen and one for the account you carry between games. Pick which you are naming; both come with their meaning.

How these mmo names are built
An MMO asks you for two different names and judges them by different rules. The one you type at character creation belongs to the world and has to pass a filter: one word, around twelve characters, letters only, no spaces or digits, and no letter three times in a row. The one on your account is a handle you carry between games, and it may compound words, take a number and be stylised. This generator builds both and keeps them apart.
The fantasy register is tuned for the high-fantasy MMO screen: liquids and nasals (l, r, m, n) set against k, th and v, clear vowels, and light endings on n, r, l and th, in two or three syllables with no cluster a guild leader would have to spell out in chat. The endings carry the meaning: -ar (warrior), -dor (shield-bearer) and -thas (sworn to the light) read masculine, -iel (daughter of the dawn), -ara (star-reader) and -lyn (of the still lake) feminine.
Sci-fi character names use a harder inventory on purpose. The onsets cluster (kr, dr, vr, thr), the vowels are short with no diphthongs, and the codas stop dead on x, k, rn, sk and ct, so the name reads as a designation rather than a given name. It is audibly different from the softer far-future names in the Sci-Fi generator and from the English street handles in the Cyberpunk one. Endings say where the character was made: -kor (born on a war fleet), -ka (station-born), -ix (gene-line marker).
Gamertags are compounds of two glossed English words: a quality that fronts the name (Shadow, Iron, Frost, Grim) and a noun that closes it (fang, bane, vigil, warden), so ShadowFang and IronVigil mean something you can read under the name. The tag style adds the ending people actually register once the clean version has gone: a number, an X, Prime. Keep it sayable. A name the group can pronounce gets typed in chat and invited back; a joke name is read once and left off the raid roster.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what players and writers ask us most
The name I want is already taken. What do I do?
Change a sound rather than the spelling. Swapping one root (ShadowFang to ShadowClaw), adding a syllable, or moving to a different vowel keeps the name sayable, while doubled letters and digits dropped inside a word do not. If the character name itself is gone, use the Tag style: an ending such as 77, X or Prime is what most players register in the end, and nobody reads it as a climbdown.
How long can an MMO character name be?
Most games cap it at about twelve characters and accept letters only: no spaces, no digits, usually at most one apostrophe or hyphen, and three of the same letter in a row rejected. Both character styles here produce a single word with no digits in it. Short and Medium are built for that limit and Long deliberately runs past it, so read the longest results against your own game before you settle.
What is the difference between a character name and a gamertag?
A character name belongs in the game world and is read aloud by the people you play with, so it is a single pronounceable word. A gamertag, handle or pseudo is your account name across games, so it can compound English words and take a number. Use Fantasy or Sci-fi for the first, Gamertag or Gamertag + ending for the second.
Can I use a gamertag as my character name?
Often, if you drop the ending. A two-word compound such as IronVigil usually passes a fantasy MMO filter; the same name with 77 on the end does not, because digits are rejected at character creation in most games.
Are these names safe to use?
Yes. Every name is generated from original data written for this site: syllable banks and word lists, not a scrape of anyone else’s characters. Well-known MMO characters and streamer handles are blocked so the grammar cannot land on one. We claim no rights over what you generate.
