How these clan names are built

Totem clans compound an element and a body part (Ironfang, Stormclaw, Moonhowl) or take an animal outright (Clan of the Frost Raven, The Elk Clan). Every part is glossed, and the order varies (Clan Ironfang, Ironfang Clan) the way real clan names do in speech.

Old-tongue clans use a guttural invented grammar (k, g, th, kh, dr) with endings glossed as sons of (-ak), clan (-rak), stronghold (-gard), people of (-im), blood of (-ath). Half take the word Clan in front. They suit orcs, dwarves, barbarians and any culture that names by descent.

Noble houses use a softer Latinate grammar with House in front and endings glossed as old nobility (-ier), a founder’s name (-ant), a river seat (-onde), a border house (-ain). Add a motto for a house with a reputation: twelve original mottos, each glossed with the virtue or vice it advertises.
