How these kingdom names are built

Realm names in fantasy follow the pattern of real ones: a root plus a land-ending. -ia (land of) is the commonest, as in the real world; -mar (sea-land), -gard (guarded land), -heim (homeland), -mark (border land) and -reach (far land) each say something about geography, and -oria (golden land) about wealth. This generator builds a two- or three-syllable root from an invented royal register and adds one of eleven glossed endings.

The polity in front tells you how it is governed, and the hint tells you what that implies: a March is a border lordship, a League is allied cities, a Dominion rules other peoples. Empires and duchies use the same root grammar, so a duchy can plausibly become a kingdom in your history.

Descriptive names (the Sundered Realm, the Twilight Marches) are what the neighbours call a place, and are good for realms in decline or after a war.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what players and writers ask us most

Can I get a name for a world instead of a kingdom?

Use the World generator, which produces grander, more mythic names. This one is scaled to a country.

How do I get several kingdoms that sound related?

Generate in Name only and pick names that share an ending (-mar, -gard). Realms that share an ending read as former provinces of one empire.

Are these real countries?

No. The roots are generated and the endings are common land-words; any resemblance to a real place is coincidence.

Free to use?

Yes, freely.
