How these fantasy surname names are built

Real surnames formed four ways: from a place (Ashford), a trade (Fletcher), a parent (Harrison) or a description (Whitlock, white lock of hair). Fantasy surnames borrow the first two and add a fifth, the evocative compound (Ravenmere, Stormward), which is rare in history and everywhere in fiction. This generator offers all of them, and glosses every part, so Thornwick is thorn plus farm and Wolfbane is slayer of wolves.

Compound surnames pair thirty glossed first elements with thirty second elements, chosen so that almost every pairing reads as a plausible English place or epithet. Trade surnames are thirty real medieval occupations, several of them uncommon (Bowyer, Hayward, Lister, Fowler), each glossed with the job.

Noble surnames use a Latinate grammar with an optional particle (de, van, du) and endings glossed as of the mountain (-mont), of the court (-court), old nobility (-ier), a river seat (-onde). Elvish family names come from the Elf generator’s nature roots.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what players and writers ask us most

How do I match a surname to a given name from another generator?

Generate the given name there, star it, then come here and generate surnames in the style that matches the character’s background: trade for commoners, noble for gentry, compound for heroes and outlaws, elvish for elves and half-elves.

Are the trade names real?

Yes. They are genuine medieval occupational surnames, which is why they read as authentic. The compounds and noble names are generated.

Free to use?

Yes, freely.
