Alien Name Generator

Aliens should not all sound like one species. Pick the sound of yours: clicks and hard stops, long liquid vowels, or the split form with an apostrophe.

How these alien names are built

Science fiction codes a species by its phonology before it describes a single tentacle. Harsh species get x, z, k, q and th with closed syllables and heavy clusters; gentle species get l, n, m and s with open syllables and long vowel runs; the split form with an apostrophe marks a language with glottal stops. This generator gives you all three as separate grammars.

Endings carry a gloss in each register. Harsh: -oth (of the hive), -ak (warrior caste), -ul (elder), -aan (far-traveller), -ka (of the brood). Melodic: -ai (singer), -ia (of the tide-world), -oa (far-seer), -een (of the light), -ora (grower). Split names gloss both halves (Kel’thak: sky-hunter).

Gender is treated lightly, because most alien species in fiction do not map to it. A few endings lean one way; most are shared.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what players and writers ask us most

Can I get a whole species’ worth of names in one style?

Yes. Pick one style, set How many to 48, and every name will share the phonology, which is what makes them read as one people.

Which style for an insectoid or reptilian species?

Harsh for both, though reptilian names suit the Dragonborn generator’s hissing register too. Melodic suits aquatic, avian or psychic species.

Free to use?

Yes, freely.
