How these bugbear names are built

Bugbears, goblins and hobgoblins share a language in most settings, so the grammar here is deliberately the goblin one played an octave down. The same family of stops and sibilants, but voiced rather than spat: b, g, gr, d and dr where a goblin has sn, sk and k. Nasals carry the weight, the vowels are long and back (u, oo, ou, au), and the codas hum rather than click.

The difference you hear is length. Goblin names run to one or two thin syllables; bugbear names take two full ones with a four-letter minimum, so Grumbog and Boodnug arrive slow where Snik arrives fast. One ending, -nak (biter), is shared with the goblin generator on purpose, because the two peoples are meant to sound like cousins.

Endings carry meaning and gender, and they were chosen to sit low in the mouth. Masculine endings are -og (broad-backed), -ub (club), -mug (heavy-handed), -nog (slow to anger), -gorm (grim) and -dar (walks in shadow). Feminine endings are -ga (strong), -ooma (deep-voiced), -una (mother of the warren), -ma (keeper) and -olga (wide as a door). Neutral -nak (biter) and -um (quiet) suit any bugbear, and the hint under a name is the ending it took.

The second part is an epithet, not a surname, and it is earned either by violence (Neckbreaker, Gatebreaker, Throatfinder) or by a habit the rest of the warband noticed (Slowchew, Snoreloud, the Hoarder, the Still). Both halves come glossed, so a name like Grumbog the Patient Shadow arrives with a character note already attached. Turn the epithet off for a young bugbear who has not yet done anything the warband thought worth remembering.

Do bugbears use goblin names?
