How these drow names are built

Drow names in the genre are the elvish grammar turned hostile: the same love of vowels and liquids, but with z, x, q and dr at the front and hissing -ss, -th and -x at the back. This generator uses that inventory and permits sharper clusters than a surface-elf grammar would, so Zaknyr and Vierith come out drow rather than merely elvish.

Drow society is matriarchal in most settings, and the endings reflect it: feminine endings -ra (weaver), -iira (chosen), -ine (venom) and -na (priestess) carry rank; masculine endings -zt (blade), -yn (shadow), -ar (hunter) and -os (servant) carry function. The gloss under each name shows which it took.

House names compound a glossed root (Bae, Xor, Tlin, Zau) with a second element (nre, larn, thyr, vaen). Four in ten take the apostrophe form (Xor’thyr) that many players associate with drow nobility; the rest run together (Tlinvaen). Both forms are original.

A drow introduces themselves given name first, house second, and a commoner may have no house at all. Use Given name only for the rank and file.

The Elf generator’s dark register is a quick option that shares the elvish family roots. This generator has its own grammar, matriarchal endings with glosses, and house names, so it produces fuller drow characters.

Do all drow have house names?

No. Nobles carry the house name proudly; commoners and outcasts are known by given name alone, or by the house they serve. Generate Given name only for those.

Are these Forgotten Realms names?

They are in the style of drow as D&D describes them, but generated from original data. Well-known canonical names and houses are blocked so they cannot appear.
