How these planet names are built

Real exoplanets carry their star’s name and an order letter or numeral, and science fiction borrows the shape: a Greek letter (the star’s rank in its constellation), an invented star name with a Latinate ending, and a numeral for the planet’s orbit. The hint under each name reads the designation back (third world, first planet found).

Colonies are named for hope or for home: New and Nova for the old world left behind, Port and Fort for what the settlement was for, and roots like Meridian, Halcyon, Providence and Landfall that carry the founders’ mood. A few take Prime, the way flagship colonies do.

Alien homeworlds use a harsh, clicking grammar (x, z, k, q, th) with endings glossed as homeworld, moon-world, dead world or garden world. Mythic names reuse the World generator’s register for planets in a space-fantasy setting.

Are the survey designations real stars?

No. The Greek letters are real, the star names are invented, so no designation here points at a real object. That is deliberate: a real designation would already have a real planet.

How do I name a whole system?

Generate a survey designation, keep the Greek letter and star name, and vary the numeral yourself: Theta Varunis II, III and IV are the inner worlds of one system.
