How these mage names are built

Sound carries meaning before spelling does, and readers hear fire in k, r and sh, frost in s, l and thin vowels, the grave in m, v, th and dark o and u, storms in hard t and k with open a, and growing things in l, n and w. This generator gives each school its own inventory so the discipline is audible in the name itself.

Endings gloss the school in an invented register. Pyromancers take -ash (ash-hand), -ra (red flame), -issa (cinder); cryomancers -ius (frost-bound), -ise (rime), -wen (winter maiden); necromancers -oth (grave-keeper), -eth (last breath), -mor (of the dark); storm mages -ek (thunder), -ith (rain-bringer); green mages -wyn (green hand), -ael (leaf-singer), -ora (harvest).

Any school rolls a different discipline per name and labels each result, which is useful for a mage council or an academy roster. For a wizard defined by learning rather than element, the Wizard generator uses a Latinate register and epithets instead.

What is the difference between the Mage and Wizard generators?

The Wizard generator produces scholarly, Latinate names with earned epithets. The Mage generator names by discipline, so a pyromancer and a necromancer sound as different as their spells.

Can I get a sorcerer or warlock name here?

Yes. Sorcerers with a draconic or storm bloodline suit the Pyromancer and Storm mage schools; warlocks with a dark patron suit the Necromancer school. The Tiefling generator’s infernal names also work for fiend-pact warlocks.
