How these island names are built

Northern islands take the Norse-derived elements real ones do: -holm and -ey (island), -ness (headland), -skerry (rocky islet), -wick (bay), joined to a glossed descriptor (Raven, Salt, Mist), as Isle of Ravenholm or Saltskerry Island.

Pirate-water names are warnings: Widow’s Reef, Dead Man’s Cay, Fever Shoal. The descriptor carries the story (ships lost here, bad water) and the noun the kind of island (a cay is low and sandy, an atoll a ring).

Warm-sea names use an open-syllable grammar of k, t, m, n, r, l, h and w with long runs of a and o, plus endings glossed as great island, sacred, long island, sea or fresh water. The grammar imitates the sound of Pacific island names without borrowing any real word.
